I just stick black electrical tape over the gaps.

Theres a write up where the OP used cut up bycicle inner tubes to fill the gaps.

After owning the van nearly a year, I fixed this in 2 minutes yesterday. I had some strips of self adhesive velcro, so I used the softer side of the two pieces. I removed the mirror cap, stuck three pieces in the gap to pretty much fill the space top to bottom, refitted the mirror cap and bingo, no more whistle, and the folding action of the mirror isn't a problem like if you've taped across the gap.

I'm sure you can use your imagination, I'd have to take the mirror cap off again to take a picture. Self adhesive felt would do the same trick, as long as it packs out that gap it will do the trick.

I just turn the head unit up! plus I don't really drive fast enough for it to annoy me. Plus I have 2 jibber jabbering children in the back. I turn the music up when they annoy me, too!

Easy fix.... Angle mirror in,put 2 or 3 10mm strips of gaffa tape on top of each other on the bit of the base that you can now see and slightly further in, fold mirror back out again, hey presto no whistle! Worked for me anyway!
