The battery terminal sparking might a whole load of things that are not gonna cause you problems. There are a lot of things that turn on with the battery connected and then shut down when they realise there is no signal on the CANbus for them to wake up.

I would definitely be checking the tank fuel pump and the tandem pump but also have a look at the filter even though it's not very old.

Can I put 12v to tank pump permanently?

Well ran the lift pump. Filled the container very quickly. Both hoses to engine fuel pump. Cracked injection pipe nut on no 2. Fuel leaking out when cranking. Being uplifted on lowloader by green flag tomorrow between 10-11am.going to

Update. Caddy in garage showing ecu checksum fault. The remapper they use is going to fit a bypass box for diagnosis purposes only to see if it will run. Then I have to decide on what I want ecu wise on std or 140 If it gets it running. Battery is foobared as well.

I feel your pain mate.
The 1.6 engine seems to be very expensive, when it goes wrong.
How I long for the old, bombproof 1.9 TDI, circa 2003.
That'll never happen again though!

My mk2 golf gti 89 cost me £4.21 =vat to repair today. Front gearbox bracket mount bolt. The work caddy still isn't running yet.

Easy start is never a great option as your engine will become reliant on ether, my grandad used to put it in his tractors when I was young .

Well a week and a half later they are still working on it. Got to download info from vw for ecu. What concerns me is that the egr was electronically deieted in remap 3yrs ago and if it goes back to std map will I be facing a bill in a week for another grand?

Well new ecu fitted and programmed and p0601 error gone aparrently.at a cost of 800.
It still doesn't run for more than a few secs.
Now they are looking at connecting terraclean machine as a separate fuel supply to diagnose fuel tank supply problem. Then the high-pressure pump is the next suspect.

Sounds like there was nothing wrong with your original ECU to me. Daft question but you haven’t tanked it with petrol by mistake?

I'd agree. The battery was run flat with cranking on the starter. Could that do a p0601 low supply until it cleared after the van was started /running which it never did? Diesel was put in. Luckily ex bg I have the yellow rightfuel cap still fitted where the original fuel filler cap is. Unless the petrol station mixed up its tanks

High pressure pump being fitted after running it off separate terraclean fuel supply for diagnosis not staying running. Metal flakes in fuel tank and fuel system. 58000 miles.
Awaiting results. Continental pump btw.
