Can some one Please help regarding my alloys

Hi guys, I'm new to this forum and also a new VW caddy owner, I've just bought my self some 18" genuine Audi wheels, 5x 112 and on the rim says 9J

now ive had new tyres put on 225 40 18 had the wheels balanced put on the van, and they are touching the front shockers on the front, on the back I would say 5mm clearance.

I did ask the guy who sold me the wheel would they go straight on and he said " yes straight on" its my own fault as I should of done my research b4hand...

thing is I do like the wheels and they look really well... my question is will I get away with them if I was to put some 15mm or 20mm spacers on them ???

or do I need to accept they wont fit and sell on ?

would appreciate some feed back please as I don't want to go and buy some spacers and then my turning circle is restricted... thanks a lot for any feed back, my caddy is 2010 plate totally standard just thought it woud look nice with a decent set of rims on

It’ll be an offset problem. The offset should be stamped on the inside of the wheel somewhere. It’ll be stamped with something like ET50.

ET52 will sit in way too far, especially with a 9” rim. Most people go for 18x8.5xET45, that’s see it sitting in the correct position and cause no rubbing.

You can use spacers to bring it back out.

I hope that you have 235 tyres on your 9” wheels rather than 225. 225 is too narrow for that width of wheel. For a 9” wheel 235 to 265 will be fine.

You can use www.willtheyfit.com to work out the position of your wheels and tyres relative to your original ones or what other people are using.

The garage has put 225 on will this be a problem ??

A 225/40R18 tyre is probably the narrowest that you can safely fit on a 9J rim. For example Michelin say that 7.5J to 9J is acceptable for their 225/40R18 tyres. You will however find many lists of rim vs tyre on the internet that state that 235 is the narrowest fit for a 9” rim.

Most people using 9Jx18 wheels are probably using wider tyres than 225. For example 255/35R18 would go nicely on those wheels without noticeably altering the ride height or speedo reading from the OEM wheels and tyres.

Using the narrowest tyre that a rim will take has a particular look to it which some people like. It will usually mean that the rim will stick out further than the tyre. It is more common to have the tyre stick out slightly beyond the rim as that can provide a bit of protection for the rim when you graze a kerb. However neither is right or wrong.

@Danalk20 hi buddy, I have a feeling you have the same alloys as me, mine are 9J et52.. When I tried them just like you said they hit the front shocks,, I had to put 8mm spacers on and now they fit fine if I remember right I got them from demon tweeks.

45 standard so 7mm spacers or as the post just above yours says 8mm worked fine for that member.
