Reverse camera help

Post by Jono1 »

Hi .

Been fitting my reverse camera today. Got it all in and set up but it doesn’t come on when selecting reverse. But if I go through the options on my head unit I can find the camera.

I’ve got R-cam interruption on
R-cam for car interface on
Parking guidelines on
Dashboard camera off

But I have tried these in different orders. Any ideas?

Much appreciated Image

I’m no expert but I have fitted one myself. It sounds like it’s not triggering. Have you used a trigger wire with your kit?

Yeah like swan says I think you need the reverse trigger wire, otherwise how would the head unit know you’ve selected the reverse gear?
I Think that’s what the problem is. Let us know how you get on :D

Well this is what wasn’t making sense in my head with the kit... I’ve followed the instructions, my yellow lead is plugged into the back of the head unit which was labeled as reverse camera and took my red 12v ignition live. Should I have another cable going somewhere else ?

Thanks. (I should stick to banging nails in wood and stay away from electrics) 😂

It sounds like the yellow lead is the RCA cable? Your 12v lead is the power for the camera, which is why it works when you turn it on at the head unit.
Where have you taken your power feed for the camera from?
It sounds like the trigger is missing hence why it’s not working when you select reverse.

Here is a rough wiring diagram for how I wired mine in. This works perfect for me.

Yes!
That is the trigger wire for the headunit. If you’re going to wire it as I did, you’ll need to add a relay.
It may be possible to wire it straight to the reverse light feed on the BCM and skip the relay. I’m actually not sure as I’m a novice when it comes to electrics. I had a lot of help on here when doing mine.

I’m seriously thinking now, having looked back at some of my posts when I fitted mine that the relay I fitted is completely pointless. Could I have just taken my trigger feed directly from the BCM to the headunit?

Maybe one of the electrical experts on here will know. It would change any advice I give in the future.

Thanks swan. I’ve had another little play now I’ve found that wire and now it is either as it was or permanently on 😂. Hopefully someone can tell what goes where now I think I’ve found them all. Adding relays is like a foreign language to me lol.

Thanks for the help, feel like I’m getting somewhere with it now instead of just staring at it blankly.👍

The kenwood manual tells you where to connect it.

The two common options are the switch on the transmission for reverse if you can find the wiring for it or more commonly the reverse light wiring I can't remember the wire colour but if you have a look its the + wire that goes to your reverse light.

@Jono1,

Is the kenwood unit DAB? Interested what you think of it after you get the camera sorted :)

So am i right in thinking my power and video to the camera is correct. I just need to link that reverse cable into the reverse light cable.

Thanks for the help lads, I will read through that thread aswell before having another go swan.

@fat Eric the head unit was in when I bought the van. Yeah it’s DAB, I’ve never had an issue with it. It has apple car play, the mrs uses Spotify on it. Overall I’m happy with it and would see no reason to change it.

The video sounds correct.
If you’ve taken the power for the camera from your reverse light, this will not work as it’s a pulsating feed. You need a clean feed from either the fuse box or wiper motor.

In the thread I linked to, it was determined that you do need a relay (I’d forgotten sorry) so I’d wire it up as per the diagram.
