Swapped winter wheels yesterday with the first snow around here. I think black looks a lot better there.

Also took a few pictures of interior now cause why now.

Memory seats control module 3C8959760E (i have never seen it but apparently it is possible to have memory for passenger too)
Heating works just fine and it is outputting quite a lot of heat
Adjustment works and airbag hopefully too (don't know how to test that one apart of crashing into a concrete wall)
Memory works too but based on the manual I found it should be simple touch with opened doors and hold with closed doors and it was working like that but yesterday it changed its mind. Easy entry stopped working as far as I can tell and recalling memory now only works with holding button.
Unfortunately OBDEleven does not show long coding description for this module at all (maybe cause it does not associate it with a Caddy).

New side mirror fitted with DAB aerial. Need to source Fakra extension and I'll be finally be able to remove the front window aerial for good. GPS feed is useless now but one never knows.

Went on installing touran door cards and initially due tu lack of reading I was thinking it will be a straight swap which it is not exactly.
So:
  • had the cards vinyl painted
Looking at it now it is tiny bit browner I'd say but hardly noticeable inside
Image
Image
  • ordered all needed parts like switches and handles
  • installed all these bits
Image
Image
  • replaced wiring loom
Now Touran has a fuel tank lid unlocked by a switch in the driver's door. I left it there hoping I will some day get to do that mod but doubt it
Driver's door wire loom needs to be swapped with the original one from Caddy as a window switch has different plug (4 vs 2 windows) but that bit is supper easy
  • cut the front bit to fit mirror inner cover
side mirror inner cover has a bit different shape so that needs dremel. I used dremel with a sending flap wheel P150. That was making quick work of the plastic and left nice clean cut line
Image
I dont have any photos of that process. Sorry about that.
Cutting a line that fits is not that hard I ended up measuring it, cutting it and test fitting the plastic inner cover to it on the bench. That worked ok but fitting it on the doors is a bit different story. The inner cover tends to sit snag to the window especially in the bottom part and I dont think there is a way around it.
  • sound deadening

  • test fit

yes the trim on the doors and dash is different. I will probably sort that out as I do notice it quite a bit.

Let's not get perfect be the enemy of good. It fits good enough and unless specifically looking for it. I cant see it from within the car only maybe when entering.
Driver's door have a bit bigger gap there and I think that goes down to the actual door card not being snug enough. I'll have to revisit that one.
Also I think the Touran cards are overall a tiny bit shorter as I get a bit bigger gap here.
Image

Overall it is matching the dash and that was the main reason. Vinyl is a bit nicer too.

Yeah I must say I do like it more than the original. Now after doing that I would probably spent the extra effort to get the whole interior package off one car if possible. Would certainly colour match better and you don't need to deal with getting extra trim bits and all that.
Dashboard central storage is a particular example. The original ones I got were really bad and then I bough a G version with chrome but that fits better into never dash I think. Would have saved me some money by skipping that step and buying the whole chrome vent/storage set from Aliexpress.
One think learned buying cheep with hope a lick of paint will sort it out is assured way to spend extra.

I first went cheap on the seats I got and B6 seats leather is much better quality and I like the patina look of smooth black leather but then I figured I do want a memory seats and the ones I bought were pretty nice but w/o airbags so I had to find a bloke to put them back as this process is quite involved.
What I am trying to say is if I bought different B8 R-line seats with airbags right from the beginning (they seems expensive at first) I would still have it a fair bit cheaper. Food for thought.

Thank you Evil for reading this. It was really quite easy I paid a guy to do it for me. around 330 for parts and labour.
The fitting I could probably do myself but I am not that big on wiring and also it needs to be charged with refrigerant so I figured this is one of the jobs best left to professionals :D

I was hard at work yesterday, finished closed to midnight and didn't realize how dark it was so sorry for the shitty photos.

As usual started with dismantling half the interior. Should probably plan better and do more things when I do take it apart.
Image
Image

So explanation is due here I guess. I wasn't quite happy with how BT worked with RCD510 unit and even though I initially didn't want a satnav unit (wanted to employ a tablet/phone only but gave up on trying that as permanent solution) I figured it will probably be the best option So I bough Discover Media PQ with DAB and everything activated.
The latest SW I've been told is designed more for MQB so most of the config doesn't work and these unit no longer show AC stuff (no loss there)
but it more than makes up for it by having better radio interface, navigation and android auto.
Image

Fitting it was not that easy as adapting wire harness is enormous. I didn't take any pictures of it but dremel was involved again to make a little cavity to move that to drive's side.

Also decided it is good opportunity to replace the hand brake for a re-trimmed one
Image

Tried fitting CC center console in. Not that I expected anything out of it I got it with seats. There is no way to fit it. Different mounting holes, e-brake, vents you name it. Just wanted to see how it looks I guess. Terrible on the photo at least. Again sorry for the lack of light.
Image

After that I actually fitted the hand brake. Massive pain to do. On the photo below are two out of four nuts holding the brake and they are not easy to reach.
Image

Success of course!
Image

USB is temporary placed next to shifter switches. I was thinking about other places but this will be the best just have to get it actually fit. Ordered USB/AUX fittings there for RCD units and my hope is I'll be able to combine plastics with this unit internals. If not i'll probably place it inside that box.
Image

So in the end it all works:
  • radio with DAB
  • navigation
  • android auto
  • BT integration
Here are some things I need to tackle in the interior:
  • I am still using temp aerial for now (waiting for fakra extension cords to arrive)
  • lot of squeaking noise from passenger side and the rear. Will have to sort that out or turn up the volume :)
  • Passenger glove box is a bit saggy I tried to improve the fit but to no avail. Not sure if another one would work better
  • Mic works with the new unit but wire pins are not holding securely in the adapter so need to track the correct ones
  • Reverse camera will be added later
  • parking sensors are not working with this head unit. I was told I need a new control module that knows how to talk to the head unit
Here is the whole thing

How many vents/lids it takes to fit one properly? plus the one in the car currently
A lot if you don't pay attention. I am an idiot obviously.

Image

To be fair the first one without chrome was included and the last one I only needed the lid.

Dashboard 2.0
The saggy glovebox was bugging me a LOT and I think it is down to the dash being 2003 model. Couldn't find any old glovebox that would fit any better so ended up buying another dash. This one is 2013 and the glovebox fits a lot better. That's what I get for not doing proper reading first. To be fair I have not seen it mentioned anywhere.

Image

Now I'll have to fit the whole thing again but on the bright side I can address some other issues while doing so.

Installing dashboard 2.0

Image

Image

In nothing else at least I used the opportunity to properly route aerials and remove hands-free loom.
Also microphone cable needed fixing as the old pins were not holding securely so I soldered proper ones
Image
Image

Many hours later:
Image

I paid extra care to make sure all plastic pins hold properly and no metal insert is missing and I think I got that right but sadly overall result is a bit underwhelming
Fitment between A pillars is better overall but the main thing was to see if glovebox fit could be any better and sadly that has not improved.
Image
Image
Image

Am I trying to fix something that is normal? I have not seen such gaps in other touran dash conversions.

I think your centre console is too far back and as such the gear surround with joins the centre console to the dashboard is somewhat stretched to fill the position.
Maybe try loosen the centre console and move it forward a bit.

Gave my Caddy to a specialist shop that did the sound deadening before to install subwoofer and front speakers. I think they did pretty good job again but I was told it took way more time than anticipated.
I went with side mounted sub to keep it as obstructive as possible and since it is not a van and kids are riding the second row under seat sub seems like a bad idea.
I quite like the result as it is now and in terms of sound quality it is probably to early to comment but I find it better already.

I am thinking to wrap the side plastic in black carpet to match the floor and make the woofer practically disappear. Perhaps I'll do that.

so that's another item off my list done. Apart from never ending dashboard fitting/adjusting I'll be focusing on wireless charging and android auto.

Mk3 phone charging options left some things to be desired so I thought I'll get myself a Mk4 center console bit and try to fit it in.
Image
It won't go in like that but maybe combining these two together with a little bit of plastic welding suede wrap together with the lower dashboard?
Bit of a project that I'll be working on later not the highest priority right now.

Reserching Mk4 rear facelift and reverse camera options that would work well with my extra dash cam. Will post something on that soon.
