Just double check the part numbers are right, with yours having a front end swap, as they may be different for a MK4.

Finished skinning my battery tray so got it swapped over.
I filled the voids with Evercoat Fibre tech prior to skinning but forgot to get any photos.
Only a few more parts to be done and dare I say it, I think the engine bay will be finished.

Yet more playing around with the Carbon fibre Skinning. I’m my own worst nightmare as every time I’m in the engine bay I see more bits that need sorted or could be improved in some way.
Skinned some new heated washer jets and a starter motor + lead cover (I know it’s not even visible unless you’re specifically looking for it, but I know it’s there, so it was a must).
I also made a cover for my brake fluid reservoir, which I’m rather pleased with.
I obviously don’t have mould tooling etc, so what I did was I wrapped a spare reservoir in tin foil, and then wrapped again in foil tape (sticky side up, to stick that carbon to). Skinned this roughly with Carbon and while the wife was out I baked it for 6 hours. That gave me a hard shell which I cut the back and bottom off. This left me with a rough cover that could slide on/off. I then added a sight hole for the level indicator on the bottle, and smoothed the rough surface with Evercoat fibre tech. Once sanded to shape, I Skinned this using two pieces or Carbon fibre, then once layered up with epoxy, I baked it for a further 8 hours, then sanded and lacquered it. Really pleased with how it turned out and as it slides on/off with a nice tight fit there is no need for permanently securing it to the bottle.
Absolutely love the look of my engine bay now.

Interesting technique with the brake bottle. Foil tape works in much the same way and is slightly thinner plus it sticks to the surface but is easily removed. Brown packaging tape is also good for moulding as the carbon doesn't stick to that either.

Another 'trick' is to use a spray glue like Fusion Fix https://www.easycomposites.co.uk/fusion ... y-adhesive which gives you a tacky surface to stick the carbon to but doesn't react with the resins. I think it would work on packaging tape as a release surface but its been a while since I did any carbon. You can also make your own fibre locked fabric with it which reduces the amount the weave can move around and almost makes it like pre preg in being able to align the weaves.

One other option might have been to use offset (or sheet) wax. It can be moulded around quite complex surfaces and it gives you a specific thickness to work from. Thinnest version is 1mm so you would place that over the bottle, apply either tacking coat of black epoxy or the spray glue, apply your top piece of carbon and epoxy. Once dry the wax can be removed and structural layers up to 1mm thick of carbon are applied behind the top surface. Its normally used in reverse to create moulds but reckon it would work the way I described.

Top job again Chris, how you can still think of more mods when your van is at this stage truly amazes me.

What can I say you have done it again there Chris.
Awesome work and what a fantastic look.
A 3 Michelin chef could serve a 3 course meal in that engine bay and the food would be over shadowed.
