Thinking of changing my 2012 standard rear bumper too a mk4 bumper, are they a direct fit or is there something else needing done ?

You will need the crash bar and side support brackets to mount the bumper properly.
The crash bar is not strictly necessary unless you have the added complication of rear parking sensors.
If you do have parking sensors, that is an added complexity which might involve replacing the parking sensor control module.
