Towing with 2005 Caddy SWB 1.9 Tdi Manual

Post by Cheese03 »

Hi guys - is there anyone out there that has done some regular towing with a Towing with 2005 Caddy SWB 1.9 Tdi Manual ? I am looking to tow a caravan that weighs 1350 kg fully loaded, and the caddy tows it OK but I do need to ride the clutch to get it moving from standstill. I am worried that using the Caddy as a long distance tow vehicle may place too much weight on the van, even though it is rated to tow 1500kg with brakes. I'm worried that although I am within legal limit the parts like clutch or general suspension might fail ? Having said that they may be fine too but just looking for opinions of long term towers with SWB caddy 1.9 diesel ?

Mine towed without problems. Even the heavier loads. But it was remapped and had a new clutch with the 6 speed gearbox install.

Does yours feel like the clutch is slipping when driving from standstill with the caravan?

Towing generally gives the clutch and gearbox more stress than normal. It's in the nature of it. If you need to ride the clutch maybe it's already a bit worn

Just feels a bit like I need to get the revs up so it doesn't stall from start off. Otherwise it tows pretty good.
How did you remap yours ? Is it a matter of buying an off the shelf unit and plug and play ? Are you in Australia, where did you get remap done ?

I had mine remapped at a local shop here in the Netherlands. They did a custom remap, which imho is always better than those of the shelf boxes.

I am sure that in Australia there are companies too that can do a custom remap for you, but I don’t know which and where as I am not from there 😅.

But even before the remap, mine would just go with releasing the clutch, never had it stall.
