Here is a thought for you good people,

does anyone use diesel fuel cleaners as additives to help keep the injectors and other sensors a bit clean?

I am new to this group, nobody seems to reply to anything I have posted, I have ex BG van - Just purchased, It was limited to just over 70mph and had the adblue turned off. I will be possibly every other month on a full fill up - add fuel injector cleaners etc

I just this lunchtime watched a video from an engine builder about a teardown of 6.7l powerstroke diesel (yank lump) that had died just shy of one million miles. Aside from the obvious diligent regular maintenance by the owner, he said that the secret (in his opinion) was the regular use of a lubricating fuel additive by the owner, alongside frequent fuel filter changes, to keep the fuel system in tip top condition.

Like every other automotive maintenance subject, the use and benefit of fuel additives is a topic of much debate and argument. You will never get a conclusive answer either way. At the end of the day you pays your money and makes your choice, etc. Personally, I use a good quality fuel and regular filter changes and I've not had any issues (so far).

I add a cetane booster every time I fill up the tank (with regular diesel). It's mainly 2-Ethyl-Hexyl Nitrate (2-ehn). Some version also have detergents and/or lubricants... It's meant to improve combustion and keep injectors clean.
Does it work? I haven't got a clue. The theory says it does and it's cheaper than premium fuel. But it's impossible to tell if it makes a difference, at least for me. Maybe some lab tests could but I never noticed any différence.

I had a Freelander 2 that needed DPF renewing at 70 000 miles at a cost of just over £1000.
It was always filled with premium diesel and regularly used an additive.

I will never buy another diesel vehicle, for short duration, low mileage trips that I typically drive. The extra headache of adblue is another good reason for me to go petrol only, for as long as possible.

I put some Millers Diesel Ecomax additive in most fill ups - Haven't a clue if it does any good, but its something I've always used over the years. I can't stop using it now in case anything goes wrong.....

I've used this in a number of vehicles - it only seems to do something useful for older higher mileage engines, but this could be psychological.

I currently use it in my 1.6 TDI because it otherwise sounds hideous in 4th and 5th gear once up to operating temperature (I believe the pre-injection is cancelled under these conditions and is part of the emissions fix). It noticeably helps with this, but it also seems to make the throttle less responsive. You win some you lose some.

Darkside Developments have done some dyno runs using various fuels (premium, cheap and containing 2-EHN) so have a look at their videos. The closest thing to science I've been able to find!

Thanks for the Darkside link I'll have a look at that. The additives have always intrigued me, I've used a few different ones over the years and just settled on the Millers.

I've also found Dipetane fuel treatment pretty good, my van is a 1.9 tdi with no dpf and 388k miles on it, it will smoke a bit when driven hard, but the Dipetane pretty much removes the clouds of soot, so it must be cleaning something up.
