Help!! Tyre size... I've messed up bigtime! Lol

Post by Leroo »

Hey folks! I ordered new tyres last night... got them fitted today, im a complete clown... ive gone and ordered the wrong size of tyre ahah! 205 55 16 it supposed to be. And ive gone and put 225 55 16 on the 2 fronts. Ive used the car tyre calculator... and it's a difference of 3.36% which is an extra 22mm in diameter.

The roads in Edinburgh are terrible so the ride is a bit nicer. But im worried that I may put more wear and tear on the suspension or worse the gearbox which is dsg... I've never done this mistake before.. any experts have any advice? Will the car be ok with more rubber on the road and ride height etc.

The 205/225 number is the width of the tyre, I don't see how it would add to the overall diameter of the wheel?

If the new and old are both 55s then the "height" of the tyre should be the same.

Generally moving up to 225 from 205 is fine, providing the wheel is wide enough for it, and being a 16" alloy I'd say you would be fine if nothings rubbing while turning

The 55 is a ratio for the height relative to the width, so it will be different. I wouldn't be bothered by a couple of % though

no it doesnt work like that m8. 225 <--- width, 55 <--- is the Precentage of width. 16 obv wheel size. original tyre is 205, so 55% of 205 is less than 55% of 225. You get me?

Yeah just thought back to my many many years ago of training yea it's a percentage of the nominal section width isn't it

Personally if nothing is rubbing I'd say it's ok

I wouldn't be worried about a few % difference. I've been running 15" AT tyres (+6%) on a DSG for most the last year without any issues (so far...)

Not wanting to be the party pooper…. However… changing the tyre size or rating will most likely impact on your insurance if the tyres are not specified for your van.

Yea Gazza, its an easy mistake to make, everyone seems to think it's a direct size, but years ago i remember from the tire bible site its a percentage of the width, i mean its clearly visable in the pictures too,
Chris thats a really good point I didnt think about that! I mean im running it as a taxi so will prolly need to change them out :((( i was going to maybe just put them on the rear to make the ride a bit smooth for passengers. As the roads are terrible here. :( dammit!
What a waste of money! Anyone looking for a couple of 1 day old 255 55 16 Dynamo C A rating 🤣🤣

As long as you tell your Insurance company you have upgraded your tyres for comfort they will probably be OK with it.

Lots of people use larger sizes for All Terrain use etc.

If you only have them on the back then there shouldn't be any of the possible issues with steering !?

Stick big ones on all round
Sorted
:D - Comfy

I've got 205/60 R16 on mine and they're about the same diameter, just not quite as wide.

You can see what different tyres look like using this
