After my original under bonnet sound deadening starting sagging slightly, I decided to make a Carbon version. I ordered a new replacement item and then gave it a coating of epoxy before starting the skinning process. Then over the past few weeks I’ve been skinning it. I ended up having to skin it twice, after I got a bit carried away with the sander and went right through the Carbon (idiot I know).
Will have to see how it lasts with the heat, fingers crossed it won’t delaminate, but we have to try these things.
Hopefully I’ll get it fit this week, once the sound deadening drys and I can clean it up as it’s totally pitted with all the sanding etc.

Got my Carbon bonnet sound deadening panel fit today. I’ll be honest I haven’t made my mind up about it. I’m thinking it might be too shiney, or it could just be because I’m used to looking at the Matt black original so will see how it goes.

As the original clips would no longer work due to thickness of the panel, and because I didn’t want to make permanent changes, I opted to use M6 rubber insert crush nuts (well nuts), with M6x25 black stainless countersunks and anodised black panel washers, which are a common theme within my engine bay. I ended up having to change all the existing ones due to my new ones being a tapered version (instead of flat).

Yet another fantastic bit of work adding to the already crazy amount of details.

You should be ok with the heat under the bonnet as even wet lay up carbon can withstand big temperature differentials. The real deal pre preg is used for satellites where they routinely go from - 196 degrees C to + 128 degrees C in a split second as they come from the earths shadow into direct sunlight and wet lay up carbon can get pretty hot as the epoxy cures.

Like with pretty much anything, it’s about how good your prep is as to how well it has adhered to the substrate.

My main concern is due to laying it on top of the foam pad, I’m hoping with putting a base layer of epoxy (that soaked in) it should have a good bond.

30th July.. vans officially 10 years old today (well been on the road for 10 years). I wonder if my wife will buy a cake to celebrate, or burn it with fire . Too dark to take a photo to mark the occasion so one from ESPTR show.

Great day out yesterday with the forum at Tatton Park show, it’s always nice catching up with everyone. Thanks to all those that stopped for a chat and look over the vans.
I personally didn’t take many decent photos so I’ve just stole some off Dava, including one from when the van was in monster truck mode.

I didn’t realise till I was back home and going through the photos. Got the van in a rare stance #offroadmode

Had a leak on my tank drain, so swapped it out for Schrader valve. Reason for doing this is so I have an easy way of filling the tank should I have compressor failure, previously I’d have had to remove a line and fit the adapter I made.
I’ve never once had any water reach my tank so it’s strange that the drain seal failed, but I suppose it’s been on now for roughly 3 1/2 years and looking rather tatty externally.

Been struggling to decide what to do with my Rotiform split rims, as I keep changing my mind. My original intention was to just run them daily, so was looking at powder coated options, but after having my gold wheels on lately I’m liking the polished rims. Anyway I got Dava to do me some photoshops to see how my ideas would look.
Which would you choose?

A - Full polished (would be a dry use only wheel).

B - Full Gunmetal grey, either all gloss, or matte centre with gloss rim (could use daily).

C - Silver or Gunmetal grey centre with Black or Carbon fibre rim (could possibly use daily).

D - Silver or Gunmetal grey centre with polished rim (summer wheel only).

Morning @Lister79 They all look great and all compliment the van equally. It’s like being a a kid in sweet shop type decision this . Ok the main two I’m drawn towards are A&C.

A =as I like the full polished look and had this done to the standard wheel on an old 205 GTI. I once owned back in the day.

C =as I like the way it makes the style of the wheel pop plus I’m currently running gloss black / diamond cut wheels at the minute.

C would be the one I would choose.
