I am tempted by a remap; are you going to get a tuning place to do it or go diy?

Please don't do the diy thing.

Use Google, look on other VW forums, look at the companies offering this service. Check they are insured (to drive your van unmodified and then modified fully comp etc, not just using their personal car insurance with 3rd party etc), check they are a real company not a car park tuner, carry PDQ machines to take payment etc. Ask on here, loads of people have had their vans remapped, there are lots of excellent tuners out there but sadly hundreds of crap ones who can ruin your beloved vans for you.

It's one of the best things you can do to a vehicle if done properly. :)

I run 146hpfrom a 2006 1.9 tdi and get 450-500 miles to a tank. To be honest its fully loaded and its driven hard all the time, don't think the MPG is bad but would get more if driven sensible.

As already said dont DIY
