Cambelt change for 12 plate caddy

Post by Namya »

Picked up 12 plate caddy in March . It's the 1.6 102hp. Currently has 66k on clock.

When should I get cambelt changed and how much approx from VW dealers. Water pump has just been replaced so that doesn't need doing.

Regards

You sure they didn't replace the cam belt at the same time as the water pump? seems kinda pointless not doing the cam belt if its done 66k miles and the water pump needed changing.
I only had part service history with my caddy when i purchased it and it had 78k miles on and i didn't see any cam belt change listed so went out and bought a kit from euro car parts and my mate (a mechanic) changed it.
Their doesn't seem to be any solid interval when you need to change it, some say 60k, others say 4 years or 120k, i haven't been able to get any solid time/mileage before one needs doing, it all depends on you, I'd personally do it if its on 66k miles.
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.

Strange why the pump has been done but not the cambelt.

I have just had mine done at 52k but its a 61 van

Had both belts, pump and new coolant just to keep on top of things.

Cheers

Is that price just for the cambelt and labour? Not sure how much vw charge but I charge a set price of 150 plus parts. Cambelts are about 30 quid if I remember right.

Sounds about right I charge £140 for timing belt replacements and I think genuine belt kit is about £190 bit more with water pump and g13 coolant.

That's why I avoid getting any parts from main dealers unless I have to. G13 coolant is about 18 quid for 5 litres, belt 30 if you don't need the water pump seems dear to me. Obviously you got a couple of pulley/tensioners if they needed changing but I very much doubt it.

If I was you bud I would find a good local independent it will be a lot cheaper.

May as well see if they will throw a new auxiliary belt on whilst they're there absolute pain to get on though as caddys use the stretchy belts and as new they look like they will never fit.

I wouldn't replace just the belt I've seen toilets and tensioner fail before plus with a genuine part you get a 2 year parts and labour warranty from VW that's worth the extra money all day.

The ina belts from euros is a good aftermarket alternative this also comes with a warranty and is a full kit.

Does NOBODY read their service book? :? Cambelt change on the 1.6 TDI 102 is totally unnecessary until 210,000km. You lot are just wasting money. I had mine changed at 140,000 miles at the VW dealers using all genuine parts, including water pump and all genuine belts. Got a 12 month dealer warranty and the whole she-bang came in at under 400 quid. Total peace of mind. Technician said belt looked absolutely fine, even after 140,000 miles, and engine is now ready for the next 140,000.

FWIW, I've just had a similar quote from the dealer I bought my '12 maxi life from, prices inc VAT - supposedly a general VW dealer promo running at the mo' (normal price in brackets).

cambelt : 372 (426)
cambelt+water pump : 480 (531)

Not yet checked out the local independant I used for my OH's A4...
