Replacing standard black/grey bumpers

Just got an Ex BG Caddy Maxi and one of the first things I want to do, as well as put some 18s on, is to colour code some bits, starting with the front and rear bumpers.

I guess many have done this before... Have you painted your existing bumpers or bought non VW replacements that have a smoother finish ready for painting?

Cheers
John

I am looking at this at the moment. I spoke to someone I know who does paintwork and bodywork repairs. He said that he could flat and paint the existing bumpers, but would prefer to paint new primed bumpers because it would look better (my Caddy is white, a darker colour would be less of an issue apparently). He also said that it would probably cost me less in total.

So I had a look around for Maxi bumpers. On eBay I have found new primed bumpers for £93 (front) and £185 (rear) [£278 in total]. Lothian Autoparts U.K. are selling painted bumpers for £199 (front) and £240 (rear) [£439 in total]. That’s less than my painter wanted to paint primed bumpers. I also had another quote of £408 to paint the existing bumpers, including the grille.

Thanks, this is really helpful.

The Lothian Autoparts price is painted to colour of choice then?

That is my understanding.

Seems the best deal then, can't see a body shop painting both bumpers for the £170 price difference.... (I hope I got my sum right )

Unless your existing colour is spot on the newly painted bumpers might look a different shade - most sprayers I know would blend anything new to make sure it’s not noticed.

My Candy White Maxi is three different shades of white already. I’m not sure which panel a sprayer would try to match the bumper to as the two front wings are different shades of white. It’s definitely had some cheap accident repair work done during its life with Sky.
