2014 Caddy Maxi Life 1.6tdi 7 speed DSG.
Dropped into my usual garage yesterday for a diag on the ticking sound coming from my dash (expecting this to be recirculation flap based on what I’ve read in the forum). The garage is a small family run place but they have a great reputation and have always been spot on.
I got a call back from them later in the day saying that there’s an issue with the gearbox and that it would need to go to a specialist as they don’t work on those sort of gearboxes. Also mentioned that whatever it was, it was likely to be very expensive. His advice was that I should ‘get out of it while I can while it’s still running’.
I asked them to elaborate and I was told that it’s ’staying in gear’ I can only assume they mean for too long. I’ve had the van from around 70k and it’s not long gone over 100k but personally I haven’t noticed any change in performance. Changes seem smooth in both auto and manual. I’ve never found it to be a system that sails up through the gears anyway which based on other posts I’ve read is pretty normal on the 7 speed DSG’s. It also has a stage 1 remap.
The chap then asked me if I’ve kept up with the changes / servicing on the box, I explained that I thought mine was a locked for life dry system which he didn’t think was the case. He then called in the technician who worked on the van for me who agreed with him and said ‘no not on a VW’.
Now I’m not suggesting that I have even an iota of the know how that a mechanic does but none of this seems to make any sense to me. They also didn’t really any mention on the ticking from the dash but they did say the gearbox was ‘making a noise’ but I don’t know what noise they are referring to.
So, I feel like it drives fine but also I don’t want to ignore something that a professional has told me. I thought I’d start by posting here to see what people’s thoughts and recommendations might be..
Thanks all

The clicking dash fan to a new gearbox problem you've not experienced seems quite a leap.
I'd personally be getting an opinion elsewhere.

I'd ask them to fix the problem with the dashboard and then get a second opinion on the gearbox.
