heater fan control knob not lighting uo

Hi I have a VW Caddy 2010 ex British Gas van I noticed the other night that the switch no longer lights up , according to youtube vw golf etc you just pull the knob off pull the bulb out and replace it, however when I tried to do this There doesn't appear to be a bulb in there so I contacted vw and they told me I have to replace the whole unit for £ 320 just wondering if there is a work around thanks
