HELP Please!

Post by Baddy »

Wasn't sure where to put this, as I really don't know what the matter is.

My van is in the bodyshop, some numpty ran into me and the nearside front corner's being repaired. I'll write that bit up later in my thread.

While it's in there I asked them to do a few bits that I'd not had chance to fit myself.

Anyway, it was apparently backed onto ramps on Thursday night with everything done, all they had left to do was change the door rail and install the rail cover, all using one of Matt's brackets.

That's apparently all they did yesterday (Friday), then they called me and said they tried to move it and it won't start. The van's not turning over, nothing. They rang me to let me know what was happening and I said to charge the battery. Later they called again and asked for my spare key to see if it's a problem with the fob.

I went and had a look. It unlocks, the dash lights up and glow plugs and relays and everything else seemingly happen the way they should. Just when you go to start it, there's nothing at all.

The only new thing is seeing the Steering Wheel lamp on the dash, but I know that goes away when you drive and is related to unplugging the battery.

Any ideas? I'm assuming it's all something to do with the immobiliser.

It's a January '06 built, 55-Plate early van with the 4-spoke wheel. I read something about them changing the immobiliser later in '06?

Thanks for any insight any of you may have.

If it was the immobiliser it will turn over but not fire up.
Look to the starter and ignition barrell first.

I Had the same with mine. The triger wire come off the starter. Like doc said if it was the immobo the van would turn over and i belive it would start but cut out after a couple of seconds.

Hello all,

Thanks for the prompt responses! This sounds promising....

I don't think they've tried bumping it.

Where is the starter motor? If it's mounted near the front of the block, is it logical in that in the process of removing/replacing the bumper covers/grille or fixing the slam panel or wing could have done what you think? I'll pass it on to the bodyshop :)

Thanks again!

At the front of the gear box. May have been knocked when changing the slam panel? they have a clip connector on them so would be hard to "knock" it off but seams the most likley reason for the trouble your having.

All sorted! I've been told an earth wire was to blame, quite how or where I don't know, but it prevented it starting. Thanks very much for your help between you :D
