Tailgate rattle???

Post by Pedrocaddy »

Hi everyone, I've got a 56 caddy 5 door 1.9 tdi dsg , Audi tt fronts and land rover disco rear seats. Running 19s on 55 s . Not lowered as it would rub out.

I'm having trouble finding an annoying rattle from the tailgate . Checked the guides on side of opening and adjusted lock, all good closes nice and tight , but theres this metallic rattle going over bumps , cant seem to find it and it's doing my head in , any ideas please .

Hi mate, although it’s not tailgate related, one thing to check is the brackets that hold the handbrake cables up. They’re on the underneath of the sill. I had one snap and I was convinced the rattle was coming for inside the rear as it was so loud. Worth a quick check.
I feel your pain. I hate rattles! Good luck fella

It's also worth removing the jack if it's in the back corner, these do tend to rattle and are in an area that might be sounding like the tailgate.
If you put it back, put some foam rubber or carpet between the jack and the body to keep it all tight.

Try the striker bit that the tailgate latches onto.

Mine is from a loose nut behind the wheel :D

I had a rattle where an old camera wire was hanging loose in the tailgate

It’s not your heat shield on the exhaust rattling a little?

Is there anyone else in your household that can drive it while you climb around in the back to track it down?

Take a look at your fuel filler flap. I spent weeks chasing a rattle from the back end - looked at all the usual suspects, anti roll bar, brake hoses, handbrake cables, shock mounts, drop links, exhaust, heat shield, wiper mech, replacing lock and latch, tailgate adjustment - and lots of cable ties to secure loom etc............Eventually found there was a tiny rubber buffer missing from the inside of the filler flap where is shuts against the body. Cost pennies to replace it from TPS.

Yeah I've tried that and still no joy , its deffo from going over speed bumps or poor road conditions but I'm losing my mind .
