I know this is an old tread but its popped up when searching for possible fixes for my issue so thought i would add to this instead of starting a new one, im having issues since replacing the rusty old rear shocks on my mk3 van 1.9 at the weekend, below is where im at so far any ideas welcome ?

Replaced rear shocks with NAPA part NSA1203 rear shocks from local factor, quick search on NAPA catalogue myself afterwards and these are correct number, tightened with weight on vehicle as well.

The new shocks measure 45mm Diameter and old presumably originals measure 42mm but otherwise identical visually from what i can see, the new ones feel VERY stiff compressing by hand compared to the old ones but put that down to newness!

Van drives much better with no more wallow/bouncing i had before, however as soon as fitted i get what sounds like somethings is loose at rear rattling/knocking on small road imperfections etcm its like loose shock bolt or ARB, checked all shock fittings nothing on shocks is loose.

Checked ARB drop links one slightly suspect so replaced those , No difference.

Checked ARB bushes again one very slightly worn so replaced that, No difference.

Checked for loose heatsheilds etc, 1 of the clips off on big shield so replaced, also the shield on top of silencer corroded so thought i had found cause!, removed that as well - No difference!

Had the Pry bar on everything i can see under rear and no play i can see on anything else.

Refitted the original shocks which dont feel great but no leaks and noise is gone, typically now one of the shocks has started to leak!

Its like the new shocks are too stiff and causing the noise somehow either inside themselves or making something else rattle that doesnt on softer originals, ive changed a LOT of shocks in my time and never had a issue like this :(

Im off back to Motor factor today to see if they can swap the NAPA shocks for other brand or refund, not sure where to go from here though as was going to order up some Billy B4 which was original plan before picking these up from local factor, reading this thread another had issue with Bilstein though so now im not so sure.

Any ideas from the collective ?
