Caddy 5 opinions

Post by D866 »

So my 2008 Caddy is doing about 40k km per year and I’m probably going to change it in the new year.
What are Caddy 5s like? My must have for m new commuter will be DSG and adaptive cruise control. Ideally LED lights.

Is there much retrofitting done yet on them?

My caddy 5 has all the above and more, so much more refined than previous models, mines 120bhp dsg and I get 45+mpg round the doors and more on a motorway cruise.
LED lights with cornering are a massive boost.
only caveats are stop/start is a pain has to turned off everytime you start up.
lane assist is crap, at times it can yank you all over the shop.
very tinny...its eco to save weight, lots of dodo mat required.
but hey every car will have that soon.

Thanks seem to get 46 mpg out of the 1.9tdi tank to tank also. Looked today and the price of them is very high second hand!

As it was just about affordable I recently looked at buying the Ford equivalent of the Caddy Maxi (made in same factory) but gave up when you start adding in the cost of "options" which were standard on my 7 seat 2012 Maxi 4Motion Roncali edition.

Also note that 5th gens have the latest VW locked down IT system - meaning that VCDS can see stuff but is unable to make most changes which were possible with earlier Caddy models and now require a very expensive visit to a dealer for a time limited access code for each control module you need to amend. For anyone into modifying their vans this could add a heap of extra cost.

Finally if loading area headroom is important - presumably to save cost the lock striker plate extends well below the opening. So you may need to get used to unbolting every time you wish to enjoy the full opening height and then reinstating it once loaded. This will quickly become a major gripe and definitely ruled out the Ford/VW 5th gen versions for me. OK this is probably not an issue for many but pretty much rules out our normal summer time use of the van to load transport and unload motorbikes to attend recover bikes from events around Europe - where headroom at the loading sill is the limiting factor and damage can be very costly.
