Coolant / charge cooler

Hi everyone, looking for some advice,
wondering if anyone has also come across this problem ....

So my 9yr high-line screamed low coolant at me the other week for the first time ,

Took it to my mechanic to check it out and he said that it a common fault with VW that the egr charge cooler leaks and gets blow out the exhaust.

He did a little modification where he bypassed the unit.
Said neither he or VW can say if it will affect the engine.

Engine pitch is higher and I'm unsure if I'm happy.
